STORY
For most of my life, the Gospel wasn’t something I heard from a pulpit; Jesus was something I witnessed and encountered in the quiet, exhausting, and holy space of caregiving. My sister, Maddie, was born with a rare condition called MEF2C syndrome. She cannot speak, she faces constant seizures, and she requires 24/7 care. Growing up in a small town outside of Houston and later moving to the mountains of Colorado, my childhood was a "war" of doctor visits and sleepless nights. Our faith didn't begin with Maddie but was forever deepened by her. She taught us a love that is unfailing and unconditional, a living representation of the Gospel.In those early years, church was often too difficult for our family to attend. My "Sunday School" happened in the middle of the night, holding Maddie’s hand and calling out to God in prayer. When I felt like He wasn’t listening, I started to pray louder. Eventually, those prayers turned into melodies. Music became my bridge to the divine and my only way to connect with a sister who couldn’t speak back. Our journey was marked by closed doors, medical debt, job losses, and a period of deep isolation. We eventually found ourselves in a remote house at the end of a long dirt road in Colorado. In that silence, God gave us a year of peace that shaped my calling. I picked up a guitar not to chase a career, but to keep Maddie distracted so my parents could breathe. I began writing about our trials, our new beginnings, and the mysterious way God meets us in the wilderness. I realized then that I wasn’t just a caretaker; I was a storyteller. Today, as a songwriter and artist, my music is an extension of those bedside prayers. I’ve learned that this life can be cruel, but God is a force of breathtaking beauty and wonder. I no longer pray for Maddie to be "healed" in the traditional sense; I realize now that God used Maddie to heal us. She allowed us to see Him clearly. My artistry is rooted in that heart’s cry. I’m not sure what God has planned in my life, but He has called me this far. Where He calls me, I will follow.
